Elderly People with Vulnerable Conditions, Still Working to Sustain Gen Z

Gen Z Still Relying on Their Parents?

Seniors over 60 years old still work to support family finances. According to Kompas Daily Data Analysis using micro data from the National Socioeconomic Survey of the Central Bureau of Statistics in March 2022, it shows that as many as 9.4 million elderly people work as family support.

Of that number, 5.7 million or 61 percent bear the burden of the 11.1 million productive generation, namely millennials (born 1981-1996) and generation Z (born 1997-2012). The rest will cover their own lives or those of their co-parents.

As many as 62 percent of the 5.7 million elderly residents support family members from two generations, namely the elderly themselves and their children. However, there are also 38 percent of elderly people who have the burden of three family members, starting from elderly people, children, in-laws, and grandchildren.

Viewed from this point, the burden of life for elderly Indonesians is heavier than the burden of the millennial generation and Gen Z as family support. As many as 4.5 million millennials and Gen Z "only" support 5.6 million elderly people. This figure is much smaller than the 11.1 million productive generations whose lives are covered by elderly people.

Are the elderly not allowed to work?

It is of course permissible for seniors to continue working in their old age. Quoting health theory, elderly people can continue to work so that their health level does not decline. Working is a form of activity that elderly people can choose as long as it is not burdensome. Other activities can take various forms, such as social activities to hobby activities.

However, not all employment sectors can be a place for elderly people to work. Job analysis is needed to be able to place the elderly in formal jobs that guarantee the elderly a steady income and guarantee work risks. Apart from that, the working hours of the elderly are also shorter than those of other productive generations.

Ideally, senior citizens or senior citizens over 60 years of age enjoy parents' day. They don't need to work hard to meet their living needs and for their children who are entering productive age. Senior citizens should be able to finance their daily needs from pension funds.

Factors that cause the elderly to still sustain Gen Z are:

  • Economic Dependency: Generation Z may still depend on financial support from their parents or grandparents because they are not yet economically independent, either because they are still in education, have difficulty finding work, or the job they get is not stable enough.
  • Economic Conditions: The high cost of living, including the costs of education, housing, and other basic needs, makes it difficult for Generation Z to be financially independent without help from the older generation.
  • Labor Market Difficulties: High unemployment rates among the younger generation or less stable jobs mean they still need support from parents or grandparents.
  • Structural Changes in Families: In some cases, changing family structures, such as one-parent families, may lead seniors to take a greater role in supporting generation Z.

This situation creates challenges, both for the elderly who must manage their own well-being while supporting their families, and for generation Z who must strive to achieve independence in a difficult economic context.

What do you think? Are there any elderly people in your area who are still working?

  7. And I would like to add that when we have children, it would be better if we talked more deeply, and taught them to save and be independent. So that in the future children will not depend on their parents.

  13. Maybe it's because parents pamper their children too much from a young age, so their mindset is too dependent on their parents rather than themselves. Hopefully Gen Z and future genes can change their mindset.

  18. I think this article is very appropriate to the current conditions. I hope that this problem will find a solution soon. As part of gen z I also sometimes feel lazy, but it's not always gen z who are lazy, there are several things that contribute to this problem including fewer jobs than the number of gen z, minimum education to register for the job and so on.

  22. From the life cycle, every human being has to work to fulfill his needs, whether he is young or old.
Perhaps from my own perspective the younger ones should be more productive, and there is nothing wrong with humans when they still feel their bodies are healthy enough to work.
and the conclusion here, if you can still fulfill the necessities of life, fulfill them

This article can provide an illustration that currently generation Z is faced with many challenges as time goes by, and is always faced with economic problems which have a quite big impact on this generation. but not only that, parents are also of course faced with the various behaviors of generation Z nowadays so that poor communication often occurs

  30. As Gen Z, I feel the impact of economic difficulties. However, another cause of more elderly people working compared to Gen Z is competition in the world of work. Many Gen Z have good potential, high work enthusiasm or even a lot of experience, but all will be inferior to people who have privileges either with "insiders" or whatever.

  53. It's pretty ironic indeed. The elders are supposed to be enjoying their time in the late age...i do have some friends who's their grandparents are still working to support their finances. It's always sad seeing them working day and night, i hope your writings could be an urge for Gen Z to work harder so that we don't need to burdened our elders anymore :)))

  54. I agree with the statement that elderly people continue to work in their old age. Because most elderly people are usually bored just being at home and doing repetitive activities (like my grandmother). I hope that in the future more people will open job vacancies for the elderly..
